Setting Up and Using the SMS Function: Instructions

You can now add creative works, opportunities, contacts, and writing habits just by texting the app!

Step 1: Adding Your Phone Number to the Writer’s Life OS

  1. Log in to your Writer’s Life OS account.

  2. Navigate to the Settings section by clicking your name in the top right.

  3. Enter your phone number in the designated field.

  4. Click "Save" to add your phone number to the system.

Step 2: Sending SMS Messages to the Writer’s Life OS

  1. Open the messaging app on your phone.

  2. Compose a new message.

  3. Enter the phone number provided by the Writer’s Life OS: +1 (833) 935-4802.

  4. Begin your message with a command, such as "Add," "Please add," or "Add to my."

  5. Specify the type of information you want to add, such as "creative work," "opportunity," or "contact."

  6. Provide the necessary details for the entry, such as the title, notes, or any additional information.

  7. Send the message.

Step 3: Interpreting the Response from the Writer’s Life OS

  1. Wait for a response from the Writer’s Life OS.

  2. The system will process your message and perform the requested action.

  3. If the message is successfully processed, you will receive a confirmation message.

  4. If the system encounters any issues or requires clarification, it will prompt you to resend the message with clearer instructions.

  5. Review the response to ensure that the information has been added correctly.

Step 4: Checking and Managing Your Entries in the Writer’s Life OS

  1. Log in to your Writer’s Life OS account.

  2. Navigate to the respective section where you added the information (e.g., Creative Works, Opportunities, Contacts).

  3. Verify that the entry has been successfully added.

  4. Make any necessary edits or updates to the entry.

  5. Use the Writer’s Life OS's features to track, organize, and manage your information effectively.

Creative works

Give the system: 

  • Title

  • Word count

  • Form

  • Stage

  • Notes

Text anything, something like:

  • "I have a story idea I'd like to call XXX…"

  • "I have a new creative work  called XXX and I just finished the first draft."

  • “Please add my story idea ‘XXX’ to my creative works”

Note: you can't currently update a previous creative work with SMS. 

You cannot currently add a theme. 

Contacts

  • I just made a new contact named XXX

  • Please add XXX to my contacts

  • Add XXX to my contacts; their phone number is YYYYY, and they live at 123 Z Street in NYC

  • Add, notes, notes, telephone, title, 

Habits

When you wrote: today, yesterday, or date

How many pages, words, or pieces you wrote

  • I wrote 500 words yesterday

  • I wrote 2 pages today

  • Please add the fact I wrote 200 words on April 12th to me habit tracker

Publications

  • Add a new publication called XXX

  • Add The New York Times to my publications

  • I just met an editor from National Geographic, please add it to my publications list

Title, notes, appeal, pay

Opportunities

Gist, deadline, status, appeal, pay

  • Please add this opportunity: xxxxxxx

  • I’m interested in this opportunity: xxxxxxxxx, please add all relevant data to my Writer’s Life OS

  • Add the opportunity XXX with the note “remember to call Michael about the podcast”

Note: The SMS function currently supports adding creative works, opportunities, contacts, and tracking habits. Some limitations may apply, such as the need for specific wording or the inability to connect certain types of information. The system will provide guidance and prompt you to reword your message if necessary.

At this time, we're unable to add information that would require a reference, such as a reference to a contact you've already input to be attached to an opportunity
